MARKO HIETALA - Pyre Of The Black Heart

Friday, January 10, 2020 - Posted by Nuclear Blast, in Albums, Communiqués de presse

After starting influential career few decades ago and selling enormous piles of groundbreaking albums along the way, what might be the next logical move for one of the most gifted singing heavy metal bassists of our – or all – times?

Yes, indeed: a solo record.

Very own studio album is exactly what Savonian rooster MARKO HIETALA – oh, you read it right: artist name Marco Hietala lies in the past these days – has been planning and sketching already for ages.

The obvious question remains: why has it taken so damn long? With that kind of exceptional gifts for playing, composing, singing and writing, most fans of wonderful rock music would have expected MARKO HIETALA’s own studio recording many, many moons ago.

Well, there has been some serious speed bumps en route – most monumental of them being one certain Finnish musical ensemble named NIGHTWISH. Let’s explain this in plain English: when your band is easily one of the biggest names in the world of heavy metal, there may just be no time for external activities.

Enter 2017. Enter NIGHTWISH’s year-long sabbatical, following enormously successful “Endless Forms Most Beautiful” album and consequent 18 month long world tour.
When we decided to allow some rest for NIGHTWISH – first time in about 20 years –, I soon reached the point of realization: The time has come – I will be spending my year off by working like hell... Working around my own album”, says Hietala with a smile.

After my musical career started in the dawn of 1980s, I have ever since been coming up with all kinds of ideas. Of course, good pile of selected works have been used by NIGHTWISH and huge number of epiphanies have been released on TAROT’s – my other band – albums, but on top of these, there has been a lot of musical discoveries that have been sounding little bit more personal and also somewhat different... You know, there is definitely different kind of mindset when you are just writing something out of the blue, and there’s simply zero need to justify these ideas to some band who already has its own style and sound.

When asked about the certain goals concerning the first solo album – namely “Pyre of the Black Heart” –, Hietala ponders for a good moment.

Well, let’s put it this way: NIGHTWISH is without a doubt my main band, and thanks to income from that direction, I don’t have to be that commercially aware... What I mean is that when I was coming up with the ideas for this solo work, I was able to do simply anything without limits at all. Really, even if I got some completely wacky idea (that I liked), I just utilized it immediately without hesitation”, laughs bearded musician.

So if I had a goal, it was not to have any kind of limits, but to prepare unpredictable, spontaneous, adventurous, ferocious and intimate album. And when I am listening to the final album by myself these days, I can say with a hand on my heart that I – or rather us – pulled it off... The record’s really diverse musical roller coaster ride from strong emotion to another, and nothing makes me more happy at the moment!

That’s the thing: when anyone voices out sentence “ MARKO HIETALA’s going to release an solo album”, some 99% of the fans of harder music are thinking that there will another “heavy metal to the bone” -album in the pipeline. Well, think again.

I would call the style of my solo record as “hard prog”. There are definitely very metallic elements, but that’s just one twist in a bigger picture. Alongside powerful riffs and sounds, there are progressive flavours, acoustic moods,
atmospheric stuff and whatnot”, Hietala points out.

Just listen to the hard rocking first single “Stones” and accompany that with more or less tongue-in-cheekkind of song “Runner of the Railways” and epic and bombastic ballad “I Dream”, and you have screatched the surface. Yes: I guarantee that there are a lot of different material to deal with!

Hietala’s voice has barely faded away, when he is already homouring his prodigious band mates.

Even if “Pyre of the Black Heart” is definitely my solo album, I didn’t compose everything on my own. When the song writing was really happening, I kept sending all the ideas for my long-time collaborators Tuomas Wäinölä [guitar] and Vili Ollila [keyboards], and this twosome came up with great additions and arrangements one after another. The drummer Anssi Nykänen – simply a wizard behind his set – completed the line-up like no other.”

Already mentioned “time consumer” NIGHTWISH is soon re-starting its steaming motors with new studio album and world tour, but despite this, MARKO HIETALA has found some time to head out for an European solo tour as well.

Come February... I simply can’t wait to get out and perform these songs for multinational friends of my music”, Hietala nods and continues: “I strongly recommend to come to see me and my band now, as this will be my first and last European solo tour in a long time – or ever!

Blaze of Perdition launches new single "With Madman's Faith"

Thursday, January 09, 2020 - Posted by Replica, in Albums, Communiqués de presse

On February 14th, Blaze of Perdition will release their new album, The Harrowing of Hearts, via Metal Blade Records. For a preview of The Harrowing of Hearts, the new single, "With Madman's Faith", can be streamed at

Existing at the forefront of the Polish black metal movement, Blaze Of Perdition return with their fifth full-length, The Harrowing Of Hearts - their most urgent, refined, dynamic and accomplished work to date. Richly layered, it is also their most textured release, and they dive ever deeper into the themes they have been exploring since dropping their debut full-length in 2010, Towards The Blaze Of Perdition. "I would say the new record is to 2017's 'Conscious Darkness' what [2011's] 'The Hierophant' was for 'Towards The Blaze Of Perdition' - a continuation of the initial idea, but in more energetic and catchy form. Perhaps more approachable and listener-friendly, but it's not up to me to decide," states vocalist Sonneillon. "Although some gothic rock influences could be heard on 'Conscious Darkness', here we took them out of the shadows and let them shine in the spotlight. It's also our most collectively written effort so far, with every band member throwing something meaningful to the whole."

Working with the same producer they've been teaming with since 2013 and with artwork designed by Izabela Grabda every aspect of The Harrowing Of Hearts has come together as intended, and with Metal Blade now behind them, the band are now ready to work their asses off to spread their name ever further. It's also safe to say the members of Blaze Of Perdition don't feel like they have anything to prove going into 2020. "To me, art isn't about proving anything to anyone, it's about the expression of whatever one wants to express and channeling emotions and/or abstract concepts into something perceptible, something that might turn out to be just as precious for others. Focusing on proving anything to anyone usually doesn't do any good for artistic endeavors."

  1. Suffering Made Bliss
  2. With Madman's Faith
  3. Transmutation of Sins
  4.  Królestwo Niebieskie
  5. What Christ Has Kept Apart
  6. The Great Seducer
  7. Moonchild

Blaze of Perdition studio line-up:
  • S. - vocals & lyrics
  • XCIII - guitars, lyrics & songwriting
  • M.R. - guitars
  • DQ - drums

Blaze of Perdition live line-up:

Ihsahn - Stridig

Friday, December 20, 2019 - Posted by Replica, in Albums, Vidéo, Communiqués de presse

IHSAHN will release the first of two five-track EPs - inspired by and dedicated to his home county of Telemark - on February 14, 2020 via Candlelight Records.

The first Telemark EP represents the dark, brutal and aggressive side of Ihsahn’s compositional identity. With three new original songs and two ferocious cover versions, it represents a celebration of the defiant spirit that first inspired him to follow a creative path, forming Emperor, three decades ago.

Ihsahn further explains; “The title of the EP is Telemark – it’s the county I grew up in and still live in, so the whole thing is situated there and very much inspired by that. So you could say it’s a roots-orientated album. I decided early on that I wanted this to be very purely related to black metal aesthetics. I wanted to distil the basic, bare bones black metal influences of my musical roots, given the overall concept, writing something for and from Telemark. I decided to do Norwegian lyrics for the first time, too. It feels very much closer to home in many ways.”

TRACKLIST
  1. Stridig
  2. Nord
  3. Telemark
  4. Rock ‘n’ Roll Is Dead [Lenny Kravitz cover]
  5. Wrathchild [Iron Maiden cover]

Having spent the last few years steadily becoming a prolific live performer, both with his solo band and a rejuvenated Emperor, Ihsahn already has firm plans to take the Telemark EP out on the road. The new material crackles with live energy and sounds custom-designed to tear people’s faces off in the live arena: with grand plans to bring the record’s chilling black metal aesthetics to life for some unique live performances, the defiant spirit of Telemark looks certain to shake foundations across the world in 2020.

“My idea all along was that I would perform all the contents of this EP live, but to build the live set, piecing songs from my catalogue that fit with the aesthetics of the EP,” Ihsahn concludes. “I was very lucky to be able to collaborate with the Inferno Festival, so I’ll be premiering this show at Inferno in 2020. The plan is to then follow up this EP with its aesthetic and musical counterpart, wherein I can distil all those more progressive, experimental and mellow elements of my music.”

MORE ABOUT IHSAHN: -

More than any other artist to emerge from the fertile black metal scene of the early ‘90s, Ihsahn has firmly established himself as an unpredictable maverick. Frontman and chief composer with the legendary Emperor, he re-wrote the rulebook on epic extreme music across a series of albums that are still widely regarded as classics. From the genre-defining majesty of In The Nightside Eclipse in 1994 to 2001’s wildly progressive tour-de-force Prometheus: The Discipline Of Fire & Demise, Ihsahn’s unique approach and liberated musical ethos ensured that when he embarked on a solo career with 2006’s The Adversary, fans were primed to expect the unexpected.

Since that debut’s explosive arrival, Ihsahn has forged fearlessly ahead, conjuring an extraordinary catalogue of ground-breaking solo albums along the way. Strong roots in extreme metal have remained an integral part of his ever-evolving sound, but from the saxophone-drenched melancholy of 2010’s After to the avant-garde squall of 2013’s Das Seelenbrechen and on to the ornate duality that produced the vicious and weather-beaten Arktis (2016) and the icily claustrophobic Ámr (2018), Ihsahn’s musical journey has been relentlessly fascinating and frequently revelatory.
